Cow Gestation Calculator

Cows carry a calf for about 283 days on average – just over nine months – with most calving between about 274 and 292 days after breeding depending on breed and the calf. This cow gestation calculator adds the gestation length for your breed to the breeding or AI date and shows the expected calving date, a calving window and key dates to plan around.

    How long are cows pregnant?

The traditional figure is 283 days. Modern data suggests many beef cattle now average a little less: a 2026 Kansas State University analysis of more than 100,000 Angus AI records found an average of 278.6 days, with about two-thirds of pregnancies between 274 and 283 days. Selection for easy calving and lighter birth weights has gradually shortened gestation in some breeds.

Breed averages vary between studies and herds, so treat these as guides. Crossbred cows usually fall between their parent breeds, and the bull's breed matters as well as the cow's. Breed associations publish gestation-length EPDs (expected progeny differences) for bulls if you need more precision.

Other factors that shift the date

    • Bull calves are typically carried a day or two longer than heifer calves.
    • Twins usually arrive early – often a week or more.
    • First-calf heifers tend to calve slightly earlier than mature cows.
    • Heat stress, nutrition and the individual bull's genetics also play a part.

How to calculate a cow's due date

Add the gestation length to the breeding date. For a cow bred on 1 June 2026, 283 days gives about 11 March 2027; an Angus at 279 days would be about 7 March 2027. With natural service, you rarely know the exact date – enter the day the bull went in and the day he came out, and the calculator gives the full calving window. Pregnancy checks by ultrasound (from about 28–35 days) or rectal palpation (from about 35–45 days) can confirm and age the pregnancy.

Signs your cow is close to calving

    • Udder fills ('bagging up') – weeks ahead in heifers, often days ahead in cows; teats become tight and shiny.
    • Vulva swells and becomes loose; clear mucus may hang from it.
    • Pelvic ligaments relax, so the tail head looks raised and hollows appear either side – often 12–48 hours before calving.
    • She separates from the herd, becomes restless, lies down and gets up, kicks at her belly or holds her tail out.

Calving stages and when to call for help

    StageWhat happensTypical length
1 – preparationCervix dilates; restlessness, mild straining2–6 hours (longer in heifers)
2 – deliveryWater bag appears, then feet and nose; calf deliveredAbout 30 minutes to 1 hour in cows; up to about 2 hours in heifers
    3 – afterbirthPlacenta expelledUsually within 2–8 hours

Many extension services advise checking a cow that has made no progress about 30 minutes after the water bag or feet appear (about 1 hour for a heifer), or straining hard with nothing showing. Call your vet if the calf is in an abnormal position, you see only one leg or the tail, or the placenta has not passed within about 12–24 hours.

After calving: rebreeding for a 365-day interval

To calve every 12 months, a cow must conceive again within about 82 days of calving (365 − 283). Most beef cows need 50–60 days or more to start cycling again, and the postpartum interval is longer in thin cows and first-calf heifers – so body condition at calving matters a lot. A cow that fails to rebreed is called open. Synchronisation programmes and artificial insemination help keep the calving season tight.
