YouTube Ads Budget Calculator
A YouTube ads budget calculator estimates what your budget will buy on YouTube – views, impressions, reach, clicks and conversions – using your expected cost per view (CPV) or cost per thousand impressions (CPM). Or set a goal, such as 50,000 views or 200 leads, and it works out the budget you need, both in total and per day.
Use the calculator above for your own numbers. Below, we explain how the YouTube Ads Budget calculator works, with worked examples and sources.
How YouTube ad views are counted and charged
| Format | How you typically pay | When a paid view counts |
|---|---|---|
| Skippable in-stream | Per view (CPV) or by conversions | The viewer watches 30 seconds (or the whole ad if shorter) or interacts, whichever comes first |
| In-feed video | Per view | The viewer clicks the thumbnail, or the ad autoplays for at least 10 seconds |
| YouTube Shorts ads | Per view or other bid strategies | The viewer watches 10 seconds or clicks the call to action |
| Bumper (6 seconds or less) | Per 1,000 impressions (CPM) | Not eligible for paid views |
| Non-skippable in-stream | Per 1,000 impressions (CPM) | Not eligible for paid views |
With CPV bidding, you are not charged when someone skips a skippable ad before the view threshold. That is why CPV and view rate are the key inputs for skippable campaigns, and CPM and frequency are the key inputs for bumper and non-skippable campaigns.
Worked examples
- CPV campaign: $1,000 at an average CPV of $0.05 buys about 20,000 views. If 25% of impressions turn into views, those views come from roughly 80,000 impressions.
- Bumper campaign: $1,000 at a $10 CPM buys 100,000 impressions. With an average frequency of 2.5, that reaches about 40,000 people.
- Goal-based: 50,000 views at a $0.04 CPV need $2,000 – about $66.67 a day over 30 days.
Use CPV, CPM, view rate and click-through rate from your own Google Ads account whenever possible. If you have no history, run a small test for a week and enter the results; averages from other advertisers vary widely by country, audience, format and season.
How Google Ads spends a daily budget
In Google Ads you set an average daily budget. On a given day, Google may spend up to twice that amount to take advantage of more opportunities, but over a month it will not charge more than the daily budget multiplied by 30.4 (the average number of days in a month). A $50 average daily budget can spend up to $100 on a busy day but no more than $1,520 in the month. For fixed-length flights, a campaign total budget can also be used.
Choosing a budget by goal
| Goal | Typical format and bidding | What to estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Awareness | Bumpers, non-skippable, skippable with target CPM | Impressions, reach and frequency |
| Consideration | Skippable in-stream and in-feed with CPV bidding | Views, view rate, engagement |
| Action (sales, leads) | Video campaigns optimised for conversions | Clicks, conversions, cost per conversion |
Conversion-focused video campaigns usually need enough budget to collect conversions regularly, so check that your daily budget is several times your expected cost per conversion; otherwise results will be slow and noisy.
Tips to get more from a YouTube budget
- Hook viewers in the first five seconds – before the skip button appears – and show your brand early.
- Make versions for different lengths: a 6-second bumper, a 15-second cut and a longer story.
- Use vertical video for Shorts placements.
- Add a clear call to action and companion elements where available.
- Set frequency caps for awareness campaigns so the same people do not see an ad too often.
- Retarget people who watched your videos with a follow-up message.
View rate and earned actions
View rate is paid views ÷ impressions. If a skippable ad gets 20,000 views from 80,000 impressions, its view rate is 25%. A higher view rate usually means a more engaging opening and a lower cost per view. Google Ads also reports earned actions – for example, when a viewer goes on to watch more of your videos or subscribes after seeing an ad – which are not charged but add value to a campaign.
Example: a product launch plan
| Stage | Format | Budget | Expected result (at your rates) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Week 1–2: awareness | Bumper ads, target CPM $10 | $800 | ≈ 80,000 impressions |
| Week 2–3: consideration | Skippable in-stream, CPV $0.05 | $1,000 | ≈ 20,000 views |
| Week 3–4: action | Video campaign optimised for conversions | $1,200 | At $40 per conversion ≈ 30 conversions |
| Total | $3,000 |
The rates in this example are placeholders – replace them with your own account data. Google's Reach Planner, inside Google Ads, can also forecast reach and frequency for awareness campaigns in your target country.
Frequency and reach
Frequency is the average number of times each person sees your ad. For awareness campaigns, a little repetition helps people remember the message, but too much wastes budget and annoys viewers. Reach is roughly impressions ÷ frequency: 100,000 impressions at a frequency of 4 reach about 25,000 people, while the same impressions at a frequency of 2 reach about 50,000. Use frequency caps in Google Ads to control this.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about the YouTube Ads Budget calculator.
There is no fixed price. You set a budget, and costs depend on format, audience, competition and bidding. Use your own CPV or CPM to estimate results.
For skippable in-stream ads, 30 seconds watched (or the full ad if shorter) or an interaction. For in-feed and Shorts ads, a click or 10 seconds watched.
With CPV bidding on skippable ads, not if they skip before the view threshold.
Google Ads does not set a high minimum, but very small budgets give too little data to learn from. Plan enough spend to reach your goal.
CPV = spend ÷ paid views. $600 for 15,000 views is a $0.04 CPV.
Yes, up to twice the average daily budget on some days, but not more than 30.4 times the daily budget in a month.
It varies by format, audience and creative. Compare your view rate across your own ads and improve the first five seconds of the weakest ones.
