Cat Age Calculator

A cat's first year equals about 15 human years, the second year adds about 9 more (24 in total), and every year after that adds about 4 human years. This cat age calculator uses that widely used veterinary chart to convert your cat's age – in years and months – into human years, and shows which life stage your cat is in and what care that stage needs.

  • Year 1 = 15, year 2 = 24
  • +4 human years a year after

Why '1 cat year = 7 human years' is wrong

Cats mature very quickly: by their first birthday they are fully grown and can reproduce, much like a human mid-teen. After the second year, development slows and each year is roughly equal to four human years. A flat 7:1 ratio overstates the age of young adult cats and understates it for kittens.

    7 yr4417 yr84
    8 yr4818 yr88
    9 yr5219 yr92

So a 2-year-old cat is about 24 in human years, a 5-year-old about 36 and a 15-year-old about 76. Cats that reach 20 are roughly 96 in human terms.

Cat life stages and what each needs

    Young adult1 – 6 years≈ 15 – 40Annual check-up, dental care, weight control, play

SeniorOver 10 years60+Check-ups every 6 months, blood pressure and kidney checks, joint comfort, easy-access litter tray

The 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines use these four stages. Older guidance also used a separate 'geriatric' stage from about 15 years. Many age-related illnesses – kidney disease, an overactive thyroid, diabetes, arthritis – develop slowly, so regular senior check-ups catch them early.

What changes how fast a cat ages?

    Indoor vs outdoor lifestyle

Indoor cats are protected from traffic, fights, predators and many infections, and on average live longer – often into their mid-to-late teens. Outdoor access brings exercise and stimulation but more risks. The human-years chart is the same for both; what changes is how long a cat is likely to live and how healthy it stays.

    Breed, weight and health

Mixed-breed cats are generally long-lived; some pedigree breeds have breed-related health problems that can shorten life. Being overweight raises the risk of diabetes and joint disease at any age. The calculator gives an equivalent age; your cat's actual health depends on care, genetics and luck.

How to tell a cat's age without records

    • Teeth – kittens get baby teeth at about 2–4 weeks and adult teeth by about 6 months; yellowing and tartar build up from the young-adult years, and worn or missing teeth suggest older age.
    • Eyes – young cats have clear, bright eyes; a slight haze in the lens and a more lace-like iris can appear in seniors.
    • Coat and body – older cats may groom less, develop a coarser coat or grey hairs, and lose muscle along the spine.
    • Behaviour – very playful and energetic usually means younger; stiffness when jumping suggests arthritis in an older cat.

A vet can usually estimate age within a few years from teeth and a physical exam – enter that estimate in the calculator.

    Senior cat care checklist

    • Book a vet check every six months – many problems are easier to manage when caught early.
    • Ask about blood and urine tests for kidney function, thyroid and diabetes, and a blood pressure check.
    • Weigh your cat monthly: unexplained weight loss is one of the earliest signs of illness.
    • Provide low-sided litter trays, ramps or steps to favourite spots, and soft bedding for stiff joints.
    • Keep up gentle play and brushing – older cats often groom less.

    Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about the Cat Age calculator.

    Count 15 for the first year, 9 for the second, then 4 for every year after that. A 6-year-old cat is 24 + 4 × 4 = 40.
